What Should I Do About Medicare?
Before making a decision to retire it is important to understand the health insurance options available to you (and your spouse if you are married).
The decision to enroll in Medicare depends on your situation. If you get insurance through your current employer or your spouse's employer you might not want to enroll in any or all parts of Medicare. Are you retiring before or after age 65? Will you or your spouse continue to work? These are important questions that need to be answered before you make the decision to enroll in Medicare. To help find those answers you can:
- Use our Getting Ready to Retire factsheet to walk through different scenarios including when you need to enroll in Medicare or risk paying a penalty.
- Attend an In-Person Welcome to Medicare Seminar to learn the basics about Medicare.
- Watch an online Welcome to Medicare video to learn the basics about Medicare.
- Find a local SHIIP-SMP Counselor for one-on-one counseling.
